Rallying to Cure Cancer

Have you ever heard of the Shitbox Rally?

7 days, 550 participants, 3800km of rallying… in a car worth $1000 or less?!

It might just be the craziest event you’ve ever heard of! But it’s all for a good cause. Behind the fun, laughs and shenanigans, this Rally has the serious aim to raise money to cure cancer and provide support to those who have suffered or are currently suffering, from this terrible disease.

Each year the Shitbox Rally passionately raises funds for the Cancer Council to invest in groundbreaking research to improve the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. The event challenges teams of two people to drive cars worth $1,000 (or less!!) across some of Australia’s most rugged and unforgiving terrain all in the name of charity. Since it’s inception in 2009, the Shitbox Rally has become the largest independent fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally, to date they have raised $14.5 Million in funds which I think you’ll all agree is a huge achievement.

The 2018 Shitbox Rally kicks off this Saturday 19th May in Brisbane where teams will assemble to start their 7-day journey to Darwin. Which of these shitboxes will survive the 3800km rally? Only time will tell! But judging by the pictures, even the support team of mechanics won’t be enough to save some of them! Can’t wait to see who survives the challenge and makes it all the way to Darwin on 25th May.

TradiePad has jumped on board this extraordinary fundraiser by sponsoring a car in the 2018 Rally. This is a cause very close to our hearts and something we really wanted to get behind. Many of us have or know someone who has been affected by cancer. In the last two years alone the TradiePad team have lost one uncle to melanoma, one mother to ovarian cancer and currently have a wife battling breast cancer. This heartbreaking disease has touched us all and we wanted to do our bit to help find a cure and kick this horrible disease to the kerb.

So without much further ado, we would like to introduce our drivers!

Say hello to Mat Cox from Jims Mowing Macarthur and Lincon McLaren from McLaren Real Estate.

The car the boys will be driving in this year’s rally is a 2000 Ford Cougar brought for $750. They’ve named this green, mean, cancer-fighting machine the “Shitbox of Glory”! Under the hood is a 2.5 litre 24 valve Duratec V6 engine which produces 125kW (On a good day!). Should do the job in getting us to our destination. Here’s hoping the aircon and anti-lock brakes still work too cause the boys will probably be needing those during the rally! You can meet the boys or view a walk around the car on the TradiePad Youtube Channel.

This is actually our second car, the first van a Kia Pregio bit the dust before we even got started after the fuel pump failed and it was going to cost more to repair than what we’d paid for the whole car! Not a great start, but fingers crossed this one will make it all the way to the Darwin finish line where the surviving cars will be auctioned off to provide even more proceeds for the Cancer Council.

Wish us luck!
